Homeless Woman, Los Angeles, CA 1997
This woman agreed to do a portrait only if I would pay her the precise amount of $3.30. She told me that's what she needed to buy a half-pint of gin. I gave her the money and she said, "Okay, are you ready?" Raising my camera, I replied, "Yes," and she struck this pose. I pressed the shutter, but then asked her to put her hands down, open her eyes, and look into the lens. She told me, "You got your picture," and walked off. I've never been too keen on this portrait because of her posing this way, but to my surprise it has been very popular with those who've seen it, and it was also published in the "Best of Photography Annual" in 1998.
